People ask me all the time how I came up with the name of the company. Why name it White Rabbit Communications? Well in the 35+ years White Rabbit has been in existence there are only a handful of people who have guessed correctly where the name came from.

One day in my office (many, many years ago. So long ago there was still this thing called the “Yellow Pages”) I picked up the phone and a woman on the other end asked me if I had named my company after the old Jimmy Stewart movie called, “Harvey.”

“Well as a matter-of-fact I did,” I said.

It kind of took me aback. I had never dreamed anyone would make that connection. I mean the movie was made in 1951.  She was the first person to guess where the name came from. Just so you know my last name is Harvey. I am the same height as Harvey the Rabbit in the movie. If you haven’t watched it, you should. It and “It’s a Wonderful Life” were two of Stewart’s favorite movies he ever made.

Throughout the years other guesses have arisen. Ones I had not thought of at the time I named the company. Several people have asked if it came from Alice in Wonderland. The rabbit who is always running everywhere for fear of being late. 

If you are a late baby boomer or a fan of the Jefferson Starship band, you might think it came from their song “The White Rabbit”.

‘One pill makes you small and one pill makes you tall.’

No, a song with drug inferences did not cause me to name my company. No dreams came to me in the middle of the night. I just liked the name and the old movie Harvey.

A more recent cultural occurrence has been the White Rabbit in the hit movie series “Matrix”. If you remember in the first movie , Neo is told to “Follow the White Rabbit”. A woman comes to his apartment and when Neo looks at her through the peep hole in the door of his apartment, she turns and a White Rabbit is tattooed on her right shoulder. He follows her.
